A solvent-free approach to oil painting using walnut oil, safflower oil for brush cleaning - no turpentine, no fumes, making the medium far more approachable than its reputation suggests

Watercolour fundamentals.
One Day (6 hours): Beginners
A complete foundation course covering paint handling, colour mixing, wash techniques, edge control, glazing and layering, additional specialty techniques to provide textures. Students will complete a finished piece to take home.
Plaster Sculpting
Two days (12 hours): Beginners
A hands-on introduction to figurative and relief sculpting in modified plaster, from building the armature, formwork, casting, carving and finishing the completed piece.
Grisaille / Chiaroscuro
One day (6 hours): Intermediate
A value-based, monochrome technique that sharpens the understanding of tone and form - a bridge between drawing and full-colour painting.
Advanced drawing workshop
Two days (12 hours): intermediate
A step up in rigour: intensive work on composition, perspective, and tonal control. Students learn to analyse and recognise three-dimensional form, translate it accurately onto the page, and understand how light — its angle, direction, and intensity — governs shading and gives a drawing real depth.
Expressive Charcoal
One Day (6 hours)
Explores the full range of the medium - handling vine and compressed charcoal and blocks, and how pressure and blending shift the mark. Students learn to read and construct form through light logic), highlight, mid-tone, core shadow, cast shadow), and to use the eraser as a drawing tool for subtractive mark making rather than correction. The session moves deliberately from controlled observation into loose expressive gestural work
Paulus offers a range of hands-on workshops for beginners through to developing artists, available on request for galleries, art societies, and private groups. Each session pairs technical grounding with practical studio time — you leave with a finished piece and a clear next step for your practice.
